An Evening of Dance, Theatre, and Motion

Join us at the heart of artistic expression and maternal insight as the Northampton Center for the Arts transforms into a realm of exploration and empowerment. M/otherhood in Motion, hosted by M/others Institute for Collaboration and Art (MICA), presents an unparalleled evening of dance, theatre, and performance art. This meticulously curated event shines a spotlight on the intricate dance of m/otherhood, intertwining the personal and the mythological, the intimate and the universal.

M/otherhood in Motion is not just an event; it’s a movement. It is a dynamic showcase that brings to the stage four emotive performances, each narrating the distinct yet interconnected facets of m/otherhood. With three dance performance pieces and one staged reading, each act is a unique invitation to look beyond the surface and connect with the deep, complex tapestry of m/otherhood.

In a society that frequently overlooks the artistry of m/othering, M/otherhood in Motion highlights the power, creativity, and resilience of m/others and their stories. Support and uplift the voices of m/other artists, partake in their stories, and contribute to a growing community celebrating motherhood's artistic and societal contributions.

Please Ship This Wet Gift is one clown's interactive presentation about terrible feelings, and provides an opportunity for family audiences to laugh together about feeling bad. Everyone can go home when she thinks you're prepared! (Because it's better if you're prepared.) (And she'll be the guy who prepared you.)

This original work uses audience suggestion & participation, drawing, made-up songs, puppetry, and cardboard sharks to explore dealing with the things in life that are unfair, scary, sad, and just really annoying. The show melds smarty-pants clown theater with expert puppetry to bring compassion and lightness to the heavy stuff.

Recommended for ages 4+, & adults who like really good shows and feelings; younger siblings welcome

*Tickets purchased on the upper end of the sliding scale help support our ongoing commitment to accessibility and sliding scale models

(with collaborator Liz Hara) premiered in the 2014 New York Children's Theater Festival, and was awarded a 2014 Jim Henson Foundation Family Grant. Marta has worked with Phantom Limb Co, Mabu Mines, and Wakka Wakka Productions, and has some fancy credits that include Sesame Street, and performances at the Kennedy Center, the New Victory Theater, and some really nice libraries.

Hannah Simms (Director) is a director and teacher based in Hartford, CT, where she is an ensemble member at HartBeat Ensemble. She is a graduate of the Dell'Arte School of Physical Theatre, the NTI Advanced Directing Semester at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, and the Ada Comstock Program at Smith College.

Subverting the Motherhood Ideal: Reading and Conversation on International Women’s Day

ARTS NIGHT OUT AT 33 HAWLEY IN THE FLEX space

FRIDAY, March 8 AT 7:00 - 8:30 pm

ADMISSION: FREE

This Women’s History Month, on International Women’s Day, we bring together four prize-winning writers: Perugia board members Jennifer Jabaily-Blackburn and Arya Samuelson, and Perugia poets Gail Thomas and Carolina Hotchandani. They will read about being mothered and mothering (or not), choosing motherhood (or not), the cultural phenomenon glorifying caretaking, and the way we become mothers to our own parents as they age. Conversation with the writers and the opportunity to buy books will follow the reading.

A grant from the Northampton Arts Council supports this program.

Participant bios:

Jen Jabaily-Blackburn’s first book of poems, Girl in a Bear Suit, was selected by Christopher Citro as winner of the 2023 Elixir Press Annual Poetry Prize and will be released in April 2024. Her recent work has appeared in or is coming soon from SIR, Arkansas International, Palette Poetry, Salamander, Fugue, Banshee, On the Seawall and Couplet Poetry, and her poems have twice been selected for Best New Poets. She is at work on a series of mixed-media blackout poems, hem, drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Originally from the Boston area, she now lives in Western Massachusetts with her family. In 2024, she joined the board of Perugia Press, and she is an associate editor of Nine Syllables Press, housed at Smith College, where she is the Program & Outreach coordinator for the Boutelle-Day Poetry Center.

Arya Samuelson is a writer, editor, and instructor living in Northampton. She is the winner of New Ohio Review‘s 2023 Nonfiction Prize and CutBank‘s Montana Prize in Nonfiction awarded by Cheryl Strayed. Her work has also been published in Bellevue Literary Review, Columbia Journal, The Millions, and elsewhere. She has lectured at Middlebury College on writing pedagogy and regularly teaches with a wide variety of literary organizations, in addition to offering private developmental editing and creative coaching services. Arya is training to be a somatic practitioner to help people unearth the stories of their bodies and transform them into art. A Perugia Press board member since 2022, she works full-time at an international nonprofit as a grant writer. Otherwise, Arya is probably obsessing over an adorable dog

Gail Thomas has published six books, from Finding the Bear (Perugia Press, 1997) to her most recent, Leaving Paradise. Her poems have been widely published in journals and anthologies. Among her awards are the A.V Christie award from Seven Kitchens Press for Trail of Roots, the Charlotte Mew Prize from Headmistress Press for Odd Mercy, the Narrative Poetry Prize from Naugatuck River Review, the Massachusetts Center for the Book’s “Must Read” for Waving Back, and the Quartet Journal’s Editor’s Choice Prize. She has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and Ucross, and several poems have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She teaches poetry with Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshops, visits schools and libraries with her therapy dog, and supports immigrant and refugee families in Western Massachusetts.

Carolina Hotchandani is a Latinx/South Asian poet born in Brazil and raised in various parts of the United States. Her debut poetry collection, The Book Eaters, won the 2023 Perugia Press Prize and was released in September 2023. She holds degrees from Brown, Texas State, and Northwestern universities. Her honors include scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Community of Writers, Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, the Rona Jaffe Foundation, and Tin House Writers’ Workshop. Her poetry has appeared in AGNI, Alaska Quarterly Review, The Atlantic, Beloit Poetry Journal, Blackbird, Cincinnati Review, Missouri Review, Prairie Schooner, and other journals. She is a Goodrich Assistant Professor of English in Omaha, Nebraska, where she lives with her husband and daughter.

A World of Piano - Jazz Piano Series

A WORLD OF PIANO - JAZZ PIANO SERIES

Friday, February 23, 7:30PM - Alexis Marcelo

Saturday, February 24, 7:30PM - Kris Davis

Sunday, February 25, 4:00PM - Rob Schwimmer

TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE ON A SLIDING SCALE* $15-$35/CONCERT

COME TO ONE CONCERT OR ALL THREE!

Join us for the Valley’s popular jazz piano series! In 1995, the Northampton Center for the Arts asked long-time Connecticut River Valley jazz producer Glenn Siegel to produce a solo piano series, and A World of Piano was born. Throughout its history, the A World of Piano has sought to present a wide variety of approaches to the instrument. The series resumed in 2003 and continued until 2013, when NCFA lost its former space on South St.

Now firmly re-established at 33 Hawley, the Northampton Center for the Arts and Pioneer Valley Jazz Shares have resurrected A World of Piano. On February 23-25, 2024, the series continues with performances by pianists Alexis Marcelo, Kris Davis, and Rob Schwimmer. Come to one concert or all three!

* Jazz Shares members may attend these concerts as part of their membership. Tickets are available to the general public on a sliding scale. Tickets purchased on the upper end of the scale help support NCFA’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and sliding scale models.

More about the artists here:

Friday 2/23 at 7:30pm: New York City pianist Alexis Marcelo believes in the power of music as a positive and uplifting force, and is always looking to communicate those intimate parts of the soul through music. Alexis has been blessed to receive an extensive musical education at the Harlem School of the Arts. He went on to The University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he studied African-American Music/Jazz Piano Performance as well as composition with world-renowned saxophonist Dr. Yusef Lateef. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Etnafest in Italy, Alice Tully Hall and more. Alexis is featured on recordings with Yusef Lateef, Adam Rudolph, Mike Pride, and Malcolm Mooney, and is currently developing his premiere album to be released next year.

Saturday, 2/24 at 7:30pm: Pianist-composer Kris Davis’ project Diatom Ribbons was a breakthrough record incorporating elements of hip hop, rock, and groove, and featured drummer and NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington, DJ Val Jeanty, and bassist Trevor Dunn. Davis and Carrington recently won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album for Carrington’s album New Standards, Vol 1.  Davis was also a recipient of the 2021 “Doris Duke Artist Award in Jazz." To date, Davis has released 18 recordings as leader. Davis works as a collaborator and side person with artists such as John Zorn, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Revis, Michael Formanek, Tony Malaby, Ingrid Laubrock, Julian Lage, Mary Halvorson, and Tom Rainey. Davis is the Associate Program Director of Creative Development for the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee College of Music.

Sunday, 2/25 at 4:00pm: Composer-pianist, thereminist, vocalist, and Haken Continuum player Rob Schwimmer has performed and recorded throughout the world. Praised by The New York Times for his "virtuosity, magic, and humor," Rob released his long awaited second solo CD "Heart Of Hearing” in 2018. He is known for his work as a solo artist and as a founding member of the highly acclaimed Polygraph Lounge duo with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart. Rob's first solo CD "Beyond The Sky" was hailed as "extraordinary" in Gramophone, "shaping up to be the finest solo piano CD of the year" in The NYC Jazz Record, and The New York Times praised his "machine-gun speed and clarity." Rob has been a featured ondioline/keyboards/theremin soloist with Gotye's Ondioline Orchestra, and he also did arrangements for Gotye's upcoming release. Rob is a leading player of the Haken Continuum fingerboard, and the theremin soloist for Ethan Iverson's "Pepperland," a full length dance piece for The Mark Morris Dance Group. Recent recording sessions on Haken Continuum include Paul Simon, Esperanza Spalding, and Trey Anastasio.

Tomas Fujiwara's 7 Poets Trio + Tomeka Reid Quartet

Tomas Fujiwara’s 7 Poets Trio + Tomeka Reid Quartet

Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 PM

Tickets: $15 plus service fee; please visit https://www.jazzshares.org/events/tomas-fujiwaras-7-poets-trio-tomeka-reid-quartet

7 Poets Trio formed in April 2018 during Tomas Fujiwara’s residency at The Stone. The rapport was instantaneous and the trio’s debut was described by All About Jazz as “a meshing of chamber jazz, modern classical composition, and improvisation, although most of Fujiwara’s music sounded well organized in advance. All three players rose to an individual expression, working as a composite unit to deliver solo embellishments. Roles were malleable, as the listener decided whether everyone was soloing, or no-one. All three members were devoted to establishing a sensitive group consciousness, and they succeeded eminently.” The trio is a continuation of several of Fujiwara’s musical interests – the flexible roles and multifaceted possibilities of a particular instrument, the sounds of multi-percussion ensembles, drawing from his days as a performer in Stomp and his bands Triple Double and Double Double, as well as other double-drummer ensembles he’s been a part of such as Living By Lanterns, No Moto, and the Taylor Ho Bynum 7-tette.

Tomeka Reid has been a key member of ensembles led by legendary reedists like Anthony Braxton (ZIM SEXTET) and Roscoe Mitchell (ROSCOE MITCHELL QUARTET, ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO), as well as a younger generation of visionaries including flutist Nicole Mitchell (BLACK EARTH ENSEMBLE, ARTIFACTS), vocalist Dee Alexander (EVOLUTION ENSEMBLE), and drummer Mike Reed (LOOSE ASSEMBLY, LIVING BY LANTERNS, ARTIFACTS). She co-leads the adventurous string trio HEAR IN NOW, with violinist Mazz Swift and bassist Silvia Bolognesi, and in 2013 launched the first Chicago Jazz String Summit, a semi-annual three-day international festival of cutting edge string players held in Chicago. In the Fall of 2019 Tomeka Reid received a teaching appointment at Mills College as the Darius Milhaud chair in composition. “Cellist Tomeka Reid has been on a serious tear lately; perhaps you noted her on the commanding new album by The Art Ensemble of Chicago, or with the chamberlike Artifacts Trio. Old New is Reid’s second album with [her] rough-and-ready .... If the title calls to mind an Art Ensemble rallying cry, “Ancient to the Future,” that’s probably not a mere coincidence.” – Nate Chinen / WBGO

Three and Three by Tomeka Reid and Tomeka Reid Quartet has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works program funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Sophie et Adam

The Hagiography is POSTPONED (Covid is at it again!) but the show must go on: Sophie Et Adam

Friday, February 16 at 7:30 PM

General admission: $20; Student/Low income/Starving Artist $10

Tickets: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/tinyglasstavern/1038101 or www.tinyglasstavern.com

The Bad news: We have decided to postpone The Hagiography program: Fiona Gillespie, the creator and one of the main composers of The Hagiography has just tested positive for Covid. She and her partner Paul will not be able to come to Western MA to rehearse or perform the concerts.

The Good news:  Adam and Sophie are offering a duo concert of Sophie et Adam in the place of the original concert.

Sophie et Adam is a duo inspired by many singing traditions they have crossed paths with on their musical journey. Pub Songs from England, Cabaret chansons from 1940s Paris, 18th century Sacred Harp singing, Milongas from Argentina, Scottish Ballads, and Singer-Songwriter repertoire from Chile... Regardless of the origin or the time period, they share music that moves them with their audiences. Individually they collaborate musically with some of the most vibrant ensembles in New England: The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Early Music Festival, The Lorelei Ensemble, A Far Cry, Blue Heron, Harvard University, the Trinity Church of Boston, etc. But as a duo, they create a warm and intimate moment in which time stops, and music from around the world speaks.

You’ll see solo pieces as well as collaborations between young artists, and every field of performing art is represented! Now in its fifth year, YPF is an outstanding festival experience that warms hearts and inspires creativity in audience members of all ages!

The Youth Performance Festival, a collaboration between Play Incubation Collective and the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley, is a FREE opportunity for youth artists ages 8-18 to create original performance pieces under the guidance of mentor artists in the fields of music, dance, theater, poetry/spoken word, and video. YPF centers the creative agency of young artists, and is committed to supporting them as they discover their own creative processes.

We are deeply grateful for our 2024 business sponsors, Art Always, A2Z Science and Learning Store, Dostal Eye Care, Greenfield Savings Bank, Renew Pilates, Wohl Family Dentistry, and Workroom Design Studio, as well our Angel Donors, Peoples Bank and the Spero Charitable Foundation.
