The Youth Performance Festival (YPF), a collaboration between Play Incubation Collective and the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley, is a FREE opportunity for youth artists ages 8-18 to create original performance pieces under the guidance of mentor artists in the fields of music, dance, theater, poetry/spoken word, and video. YPF centers the creative agency of young artists, and is committed to supporting them as they discover their own creative processes. We are excited to partner with Make-It Springfield for YPF 2024 to create a Springfield-based youth cohort. This group will rehearse together at Make-It Springfield throughout the winter, and perform at the Festival in Northampton in February 2024!

Performed by multigenerational group of professional dancers and advanced adult dance students, this event marks the third year of community-created summer dance performances at the Center!

The Northampton Center for the Arts is excited to announce the return of our 33 Outside summer dance parties!

33 Outside is the vision of our board member Carlos Rec McBride, a multimedia artist, educator, and DJ. He imagined an outdoor, family-friendly, community dance party at 33 Hawley, free and open to the public, where DJs from the Peace & Rhythm collective would spin, “head-nodding, feel-good, body-moving music.” These artists blend styles and genres and are responsive to the crowd, creating a joyful collaborative energy.

Island Spice Food Truck will be there selling their delicious Sri Lankan-style street food.

Beer, wine, hard seltzer and non-alcoholic drinks will be also be available for purchase.

See you there! We can’t wait to dance with you!

If you are new to the Brazilian musical tradition of “choro,” you are in for a treat. The genre began to take shape in mid-19th century Rio de Janeiro, where the music of the Portuguese court met that of Afro-Brazilians. Here in the US, a similar process gave us first ragtime, then jazz, and just as these genres are seen as prototypically “North American,” so too is choro recognized as uniquely, exquisitely Brazilian. Every year, Choro Camp New England brings chorões (that is, people who play choro) to the campus of Smith College for a week of study and jamming with masters of the genre. This concert, “Choro Noho,” will feature those artists and serve as the grand finale of our week together.
