Join Charlotte Malin (violin and viola), Sophie Lippert (piano and cello), and special guest James Bird (bardic songwriter) for an engaging, relaxing, and uplifting journey through multi-genre music, soulful collaborations, and connective interactions.
Connections Concert will showcase a dynamic array of solo and collaborative music: from brilliant modern classical pieces for violin and piano, to stunning poetic musings for guitar and voice, to transportive sonic co-creations between performers and the audience.
Featured composers will include Karen Tanaka, Augusta Read Thomas, Frédéric Chopin, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, César Franck, and James Bird.
The alchemy between classically-trained instrumentalists Malin and Lippert and spirit-led Bird will make for a truly unforgettable evening. All are welcome to this vitalizing, inspiring, and connective event!
Connections Concert Series is a partnership between Valley-based musicians, teachers and creative entrepreneurs Sophie Lippert and Charlotte Malin. The series is a re-imagining of the traditional concert experience that addresses our society’s growing need for meaningful human connection. At Connection Concerts, the audience is invited to listen somatically, imaginatively, and intellectually; to engage in conversations with strangers about their experience; and to explore music written by underrepresented classical composers from around the world. Discovering her mother’s diaries after her passing, Karin, the heroine, begins to examine the history of their complicated relationship from the gritty, urban streets of New York to her Swiss mother’s manicured orderliness. My Mother Had Two Faces has toured Los Angeles, Boston, and New York to full houses and rave reviews and will be off to The Edinburgh Fringe this summer.

Stuck in an airport of absurdist proportions with only their baggage—literal and metaphorical—three strangers are left with no choice but to better get to know their companions and themselves.
A comedy that fuses juggling and circus arts with dance and music, LAYOVERS explores the collisions and near misses between three individuals, as well as the age-old problem of how to go to the bathroom without leaving a mountain of luggage unattended.
A visual delight for audiences of all ages that includes confetti, play-pit balls, and plenty of pink, LAYOVERS is the scientific* opposite of having to sleep in an airport overnight. Selected acts include duo diabolo, hoop juggling and rolling, acrobatic folding chair, and hoop manipulation accompanied by a zither and a looping pedal.

Imagine hanging out with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, hearing them jam together, trading riffs, then riffing with words and trading stories. Bird and Diz are gone, but giants still walk among us. One of those giants is Buster Williams. Buster has played with everyone, from Sarah Vaughan to Miles Davis, Nancy Wilson, Art Blakey, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and on. Join Buster as he tells stories about his life and the lives of other great jazz musicians, and is joined by, and plays with, some of the greatest living contributors to this music– Benny Golson, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Reid, Christian McBride, Larry Willis, Carmen Lundy, Kenny Barron and Lenny White.
Buster Williams Bass to Infinity is a totality. It is a film about a great contributor to America’s greatest art form, and many other greats – those mentioned above, as well as Monk, Trane, Paul Chambers... All of these artists' stories makeup that thing we call Jazz, and each individual, each story, is intertwined to make up a whole.

Welcome to Heartsville High, set in a world where everyone is gay–well, almost everyone! The big-man-on-campus is the chess champion, and the captain of the football team is made cool by being cast as the lead in the school musical. The students write a controversial show called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” about straight people in the military, which becomes the catalyst for a young man and woman to fall in love.

In New York City in the 1960s, an ambitious accountant named Chuck Baxter lends out his apartment to his supervisors, who need a discreet place for illicit afternoon rendezvous. Miserable and exploited, Chuck finds a beacon of hope in coworker Fran, who is trapped in a romantic predicament of her own. The bittersweet romantic comedy features a groundbreaking contemporary score from composer Burt Bacharach. The score includes the blockbuster hit “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” plus “Knowing When To Leave,” “Turkey Lurkey Time,” “Whoever You Are,” “I Say A Little Prayer for You, ” “A House Is Not a Home,” and the title song.

Over the past decade, a growing number of children's books have thoughtfully highlighted immigration stories, chronicled refugee experiences, and showcased the strength of family traditions that bridge geographic divides.
Please join the Massachusetts Center for the Book on Tuesday, May 7 at the Northampton Center for the Arts for this Mass Kids Lit Fest kickoff event, as acclaimed picture book authors Rajani LaRocca, Mary Wagley Copp, and Hannah Moushabeck discuss the impact that migration stories have on young readers, why these books are critical for developing cultural understanding and belonging, and how to represent challenging realities.

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides affordable space for artists, performers, and educators, and offers programming dedicated to arts education, multidisciplinary collaborations, and community connections, has been serving Northampton and the larger Valley for 40 years. To ensure we can keep that track record going, we are thrilled to be hosting our third annual Revelry at 33 fundraising event on Saturday, April 27! Revelry at 33 is so named because it takes place in the newly-renovated 33 Hawley, the arts center we are proud to call home. This is a fun and meaningful way to support the Center while partying in a gorgeous modern space, surrounded by art and music!
Join us for live music from Now’s The Time Jazz Trio, yummy hors d’oeuvres and desserts from Seth Mias Catering, and signature cocktails mixed up by Kayla Manzi from The Majestic Saloon. At 8:00pm, Le’Mixx will play a set in the Flex to get us all dancing! During the month of April, leading up to the event, we are holding an art sale featuring the work of 30+ fabulous local artists. Purchases will support both the artist and NCFA. On the night of Revelry, there will be a silent auction. So, mark your calendar, order your tickets, and come celebrate the arts with us! Emceed by poet/translator Michael Favala Goldman, this event celebrates the power and glory of poetry, a form both beloved and misunderstood. After short readings of poems by a few excellent local poets, Chris Gentes will show his 2024 short film “What Is Poetry?” The film presents a conversation by four local poets about the purpose of creating poetry, the process of creating poetry, and the execution of public presentation. This free event is being offered as part of the Northampton Literary Walk, and donations will be gratefully accepted towards the Eli Daniel Nemetz Todd Memorial Fund, which supports writing programs at the Northampton Center for the Arts.

Program and registration information is HERE for WriteAngles Writers Conference, to be held at the Northampton Center for the Arts at 33 Hawley on April 6, 2024. The $150 fee includes a full day of writing workshops, panels, and roundtable discussions and a light lunch, followed by an open mic. Virtual meetings are available with literary agents. Scholarships requests are due before February 26.
The keynote address will be given by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, poet, essayist, and author of the award-winning novel, The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois. Jeffers will accept the Abel Meeropol Social Justice Writing Award, which honors a writer of national stature whose work promotes social and political change through literature. The conference focuses on writing that illuminates the complexities of our world, creates dialogue, incites change, and heals wounds. Sessions include “Beyond the Book,” “Who’s a Writer anyway?” “Writing in Community,” “Naming our Roots: Generating Poems from the Cultural Language of our Experiences,” and “Writing the Urgent Now.”
