"Unpredictable, wildly creative, and uncompromising,” writes All About Jazz. “Satoko Fujii is an absolutely essential listen for anyone interested in the future of jazz." Her wide-ranging compositions incorporate the simple melodies of folk, the harmonic sophistication of jazz, the rhythmic power of rock, and the extended forms of symphonic composers. She has showcased her astonishing range on over 50 CDs since 1996. Since studying at Berklee and New England Conservatory, Fujii has co-led a duo with Carla Kihlstedt, released seven critically acclaimed CDs with bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Jim Black, and worked extensively with trumpeter (and husband) Natsuki Tamura, Junk Box, a trio with percussionist John Hollenbeck, and the quartets ma-do and Gato Libre (where Fujii plays accordion.) Her duo release with Tamura, Chun, is described by Troy Collins as “another brilliant document in the growing discography of one of today’s most important composers.” She is also a member of Larry Ochs’ Sax and Drum Core.
