Ballroom and Social Dance with Tom Silliman

Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm, $20 drop-in. All levels welcome! Classes are held at 33 Hawley Street. Please use lower level entrance adjacent to parking lot.

This Tuesday evening class offers instruction in various social dance styles including swing, rumba, cha cha, foxtrot, waltz, tango, night club two-step, and hustle. Each month two dances will be taught, and each class will build on the one before, while also accommodating students who drop-in. All levels welcome, and no partner is necessary (but you can come with one if you want!). This class takes a progressive approach to "ballroom gender norms."

Tom Silliman, an IT professional, has been dancing socially since 1995, when he discovered that it's actually possible to train two left feet to dance comfortably. Because he started as an adult, he is skilled at introducing dance steps and technique in easy-to-understand ways. During college, Tom took ballroom lessons both socially and competitively, and competed in the collegiate ballroom circuit in Boston, MA. He began teaching in Tucson in 2000, but it was in Virginia where he had the opportunity to develop his class structure and teaching style, which focuses on leading/following skills and helping students feel comfortable and confident on the dance floor. Tom is excited to be teaching again in this area, and is available for private lessons and wedding prep in addition to the weekly social dance class.
