DANCE THE DIVINE offers tools of empowerment for personal peace and collective well-being through sacred and secular dances of the Afro-Caribbean traditions, personalized movement, free flowetry writing, call and response singing, supportive group dialogue, and Journey-Based Choreography. The course is designed for students and teachers of diverse movement disciplines as well as practitioners of other healing modalities. Opportunities to enrich movement in an approach that integrates history, sacred symbolism, and personal expression in a rich and diverse landscape of movement is the heart of Dance the Divine. All levels are welcome.
Tracy Vernon is the Director of Dance Studies at Amherst Regional High School where she has taught for 10 years. She is adjunct faculty at Kripalu Yoga and Meditation Center in the Berkshires as well Rhythms Movement Studio in Lenox, MA. She has been an honored guest teacher at UMASS, Amherst, Lesley University, Simons Rock College, Pioneer Valley Performing Arts, the Academy of Ballet Arts, and the Center for the Arts, Northampton. Tracy received her initial dance training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York. She draws from a professional career that spans 3 decades, several dance companies, and extensive travel to study with master teachers. Her expertise is rich in performance and choreography of traditional dances from Puerto Rico, Haiti, Cuba, West Africa and Brazil, Tracy is also versed in contemporary dance and movement disciplines. Tracy is many time awarded dance educator including awards such as the prestigious Grinspoon Award, the Martin Luther King Jr. Outstanding Citizen Award, and the Robert Frost Chair. Recently she has been nominated to participate on the Educational Advisory Council to represent dance in public education for the Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education.
